Winchester: Young cowboys, cowgirls to compete in rodeo
Cowboys and cowgirls in the making will compete next weekend in a rodeo at the Wild West Arena in Winchester.
The Saturday and Sunday event, which is free to attend, is sponsored by theCalifornia Junior Rodeo Association. The arena is at 32150 Grand Ave.
The age groups that compete are Pee Wee, ages 4-8; Junior, ages 9-13; and Senior, ages 14-18. The deadline to register to compete has passed.
The rodeo starts at 8 a.m. and lasts all day. There are no set times for each event, as each one goes until the competition is finished.
In order, the events are pee wee dummy roping, barrel racing, tie-down roping, breakaway, ribbon roping, steer stopping, team roping, polebending, junior calf tying, goat tying, chute dogging and finally the roughstock events, which usually start in the evening: saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, calf riding, steer riding and junior bull riding.
The California Junior Rodeo Association puts on nine rodeos a year throughout Southern California. Contestants come from as far south as Jamul and as far north as Bishop. Some come from generations of cowboys and have been competing since they were Pee Wees. Others are new to the equestrian world. Many go on to compete at the college and professional level.
