Rodeo: Bulls win the night at Roundup rodeo

Rodeo: Bulls win the night at Roundup rodeo

Milo Dailey

BELLE FOURCHE – It was one of those nights, announcer Chad Nicholson said as the last of a dozen bull riders were twirled into the dirt before the eight-second bell at the Sunday, July 3, 2011, performance of the Black Hills Roundup PRCA rodeo.

The one go-round rodeo’s final event is at 2 p.m. Monday, July 4.

Sunday's rodeo rides were before a capacity crowd at the Roundup Grounds rodeo arena watching the rough stock fireworks followed by a big fireworks display that brought cars to fill every available spot in town with a view toward the sports complex.

In the bareback riding Dustin Luper held his early rodeo lead with an 86 in spite of some good rides Sunday.

That was the pattern for the night as Saturday’s muddy battles for good rides in both rough stock and timed events still had top scores for the rodeo.

The bulls’ record wasn’t quite so good in Saturday’s mud, but the one qualified ride so far in the rodeo is Dale Stoller of Killdeer, N.D.

Merritt Smith of Gillette, Wyo., made an 84-point ride to lead the rodeo in saddle broncs.

The Wyoming team won the high school Challenge of Champions over their South Dakota hosts thanks to its bareback riders. The two Wyoming and two South Dakota saddle bronc riders couldn’t outride the young Powder River Rodeos bucking stock. Neil Williams of Mills won the bareback bronc riding with a 79.
