Bringing boots and bucks, rodeo rolls into city

Bringing boots and bucks, rodeo rolls into city

Dust off that felt Stetson, pull on that pearl snap and embrace that cowboy culture. It's rodeo time in Houston.
For the next three weeks, the Bayou City will welcome a stampede of blue jeans and cowboy boots as Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo visitors adopt a cowboy demeanor and embrace the Western heritage.
Indeed, the city's Western heritage is rich. The first stock show was designed to draw attention to Houston as a cattle-raising center in 1932. Six years later, a rodeo was added.
Seventy-nine years later, the show has transformed into a massive event that continually redefines rodeo and attracts more than 2 million visitors annually, said Leroy Shafer, the show's chief operating officer.
This year's Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo will kick off Tuesday at Reliant Park and run until March 20.
Rodeo-goers can expect to enjoy the world's first invitation-only Super Shootout, a new multimillion-dollar educational Horticulture Program and two new rodeo events in addition to the usual award-winning barbecue, performances by the biggest names in the music industry and the world's largest livestock show.
"In addition to our great returning events and displays, we have added a whole new element to what has been the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo with our Super Shootout: North America's Champions," Shafer said.
Forty of North America's greatest rodeo champions are descending upon Houston to clash spurs and compete in the show's ground-breaking new event in which champion athletes will compete in four RodeoHouston fan-favorite events, officials said.
The biggest change in the sport of rodeo in recent history, this one-night rodeo scheduled for March 20, will feature champion athletes from the top 10 rodeos in North America, determined primarily by total purse, said Skip Wagner, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo president.
They will compete in bareback riding, barrel racing, bull riding and saddle bronc riding for a total purse of $200,000.
"It's amazing what Houston is trying to do. They are changing a lot of things about how rodeo is done," said Kaycee Feild, bareback riding champion competing in the Super Shootout.

Last year set record

The Shootout is being held in addition to the Super Series, the annual rodeo competition where spectators can watch the sport's top cowboys and cowgirls compete in bull riding, barrel racing, bronc riding and more. The 19-performance series runs from Tuesday to March 19, and the cash commitment for contestants exceeds $1.7 million.
Indoor attractions at Reliant Center include pony rides, petting zoos, a school art display, a Fun on the Farm exhibit and other agricultural displays.
Officials are trying to revamp some areas of the Livestock Show and Rodeo to draw new spectators and competitors and to exceed last year's record-breaking attendance of 2.14 million visitors, rodeo officials said.
Also expected to draw new attendees is the Horticulture Program, which will include competitions, horticulture displays and educational seminars.
One component of the new program is the Horticulture Exhibit, where visitors can get hands-on with live earthworms, create earthworm farms, learn how to construct a composting bin and plant a seed to take home and watch grow.
"Everyone can take a journey underground into a worm hole," Shafer said.

From Gene Autry to KISS

This year's innovative rodeo events and exhibits are a far cry from the rodeo's modest origins.
Founded as a livestock exhibition when cattle vastly outnumbered people in the region, the Houston show gradually added its Western theme and entertainment to draw more visitors.
Gene Autry debuted as the first star entertainer in 1942. Since then, more than 350 entertainers have performed, including Elvis Presley.
This year's entertainment lineup kicks off with Clay Walker and includes Lady Antebellum, Brad Paisley, Kid Rock, Jason Aldean and KISS.
Aside from 20 nights of musical entertainment, there are livestock competitions where students can earn thousands of dollars in scholarship money, Wagner said.
The show contributes more than $16 million to Texas youth each year.

Mounted shooting event

Additionally, there will be a Floriculture Face-off in which professional florists will compete using only supplied materials in timed events.
The face-off will take place in the Main Arena. Professional florists will be given materials and a theme, on the spot, and asked to create a floral design. Visitors can watch while the florists are designing, and the judging will be open to the public as well.
RodeoHouston is also bringing cowboy mounted shooting to the rodeo competition. In this event, contestants run through a set course, firing two .45-caliber single-action revolvers with a range of about 15 feet at balloons.
"We have something for everyone this year, and we expect our new programs will be of tremendous interest to our visitors," Shafer said.

U.S. "Old West" spirit revived at Houston rodeo

U.S. "Old West" spirit revived at Houston rodeo

Gone are the cowhands and pioneers of the American Old West who drove herds on dirt trails between sagebrushes on open plains.
Their Western spirit, however, was very much alive on Saturday as the 73rd Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo parade made its way for two hours on horseback and in covered wagons over Houston's concrete city streets.
Led by three wagons and horse-mounted officials, Houston's parade is a grand show of tractor-pulled floats representing Texas businesses, high school and university marching bands and 13 trail-riding groups that proceed between skyscrapers along the seven-block route lined by more than 3,000 spectators.
The parade officially marks the opening of the rodeo and was led this year by Grand Marshal Clay Walker, a country music legend who will be the first performer in a lineup of stars set to entertain the audience in Reliant Stadium on March 1.
"I think it's an honor to represent the city of Houston," Walker said as he mounted his horse.
Walker's wife Jessica, his two children and his mother-in-law followed him in a white carriage.
"I've been coming to the rodeo for six years," Jessica Walker said. "I think it's great. The kids are excited."
Many trail riders rode to the event from areas far outside the city limits of Houston.
Charros on Parade is a 10-year-old organization from Rio Grande Valley of South Texas.
Wearing wide-brimmed Mexican sombrero hats and costumed as Mexican ranch workers of another century, Art Montes, 63, said that Charros on Parade has ridden in the parade for eight consecutive years.
"We do it because we love showing what the original cowboys looked like," Montes said.
The Prairie View Trail Riders is a group made up of 200 African American riders from Hempstead, Texas, who have tried to preserve the Western heritage. This year's ride was the group's 54th consecutive showing in the parade.
Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia said the rodeo and parade are important reflections of the Western heritage of one of the country's youngest major cities.
"It's really about tradition," he said. "There has always been a sheriff in Harris County, and there's always been a sheriff in the rodeo parade."
The float getting the biggest applause from the crowd was the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo's Scholarship float.
Aboard and waving to the crowd were a few of the young recipients of funds generated by the three-week rodeo's main mission of helping agriculture students to pay for their college tuition.
Since 1957, the annual event has given out more than 265 million U.S. dollars in scholarships for research and other agriculture-based charitable causes. Enditem

Feild’s record ride highlights finals in San Antonio

Feild’s record ride highlights finals in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – Bareback rider Kaycee Feild knew he had the potential for something special on JK Rodeo’s Multi-Chem Brother in the short round at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, a Wrangler Million Dollar Tour Gold rodeo presented by Justin Boots.

The result was nothing short of spectacular.

Feild set an arena record with 93 points – one shy of the PRCA world record – to win the round and the San Antonio title.

Feild consulted Jessy Davis (the previous San Antonio record holder) about the horse and was excited to hear that Davis had already put up two scores in the 90s on him.

“(Davis) told me that all I needed to worry about was being 90,” Feild said. “So, I was going to bear down and go for the win, and it turned out pretty well.”

As Feild took a victory lap around the arena, each section of the AT&T Center stood and applauded him for his efforts, an experience that put a big smile on the 23-year-old’s face.

“Man, that’s pretty awesome,” Feild said. “I don’t like being in front of an audience, but I’d like to do that again. That was pretty neat.”

The ride also marked a return to prominence for Brother, who was making his fourth trip out after missing a year of action due to a pastern joint injury (located above the hoof) in Odessa, Texas. Brother was taken to Texas A&M University, where doctors put in a plate and six screws to stabilize the leg.

Feild’s ride overshadowed a world-record rematch between Tilden Hooper and Classic Pro Rodeo’s Big Tex. After combining for 94 points last summer in Silver City, N.M., Hooper went for 89 points and second place.

The other roughstock events featured repeat winners, as bull rider Ardie Maier used a 92-point ride on Four L and Diamond S Rodeo’s Palm Springs to win his second consecutive San Antonio title. Saddle bronc rider Heith DeMoss won his second buckle in three years with an 88-point ride on Kesler Championship Rodeo’s Starburst.

For all the accomplishments in his Hall of Fame-caliber career, a win in San Antonio had eluded Cody Ohl until Saturday night. The six-time world champion won the short round with a 7.4-second run.

Missing the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo last year for the first time in seven years has motivated steer wrestler Stockton Graves, who won the short round and the title with a 3.8-second run.

After years of not having any luck in San Antonio, Chad Masters and Jade Corkill saw a reversal of fortune in the team roping. They started the round with a 4.5-second run that ultimately could not be matched, giving them their second 2011 Gold Tour win in as many events; they also won in Kansas City last October.

Britany Fleck won the barrel racing by the slimmest of margins – one cent – over Jill Moody. The two actually tied for the short round win, as well, with matching 13.74-second runs. But when the total money for the rodeo was added up, Fleck finished with $14,519.17, while Moody finished with $14,519.16.

The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, winner of the PRCA Large Indoor Rodeo of the Year Award for the past six seasons, shattered its attendance record by more than 83,000 with a total of 1,437,316 over the Feb. 3-20 run of the show.

Maier ready to defend San Antonio Championship

By Susan Kanode, For the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo

SAN ANTONIO – Winning the bull riding at the 2010 edition of the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo was a dream come true for bull rider Ardie Maier from Timber Lake, S.D.

That win put him on the path to qualify for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo last December, and there is nothing he would like more than a repeat. That’s a distinct possibility for Maier after he tied Steve Woolsey for the win in the Feb. 18 in the rodeo’s second semifinal at the AT&T Center.

They each scored 88 points on bulls from D&H Cattle Company and each won $1,815. Maier got on Backdoor Man and Woolsey was successful on a Bull Named Sue. Most importantly, they each had enough money won overall to advance to Saturday night’s finals; Woolsey is in first place with $5,963 and Maier right behind him with $5,445.

First place in Saturday night’s finals is worth $12,445 and the championship is available to any of the 12 contestants in the field.

“Winning here last year was awesome,” Maier said. “Just to get back to the finals and have an opportunity to do it again is unbelievable right now.”

Kaycee Feild took a chance that some rodeo contestants would have questioned in the second semifinals. Feild got on a horse named Cool Pieces from Kesler Championship Rodeo and scored 82 points in spite of the horse stumbling. He was awarded the option of a re-ride and, even though he was placing, he took the option, throwing the 82 away.

He got on a horse named Sheep Tick owned by the Harry Vold Rodeo Company and bettered his score by six points. After the judges announced an 88, rodeo fans were on their feet giving him a standing ovation. He won the semifinal and is tied at the top of the leader board with Clint Cannon from Waller, Texas, each with $6,482 in earnings.

Saturday’s program at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo will kick off with a Seminole Hard Rock Xtreme Bulls Tour event at 1 p.m. (CT). The final performance of the rodeo, where 2011 champions will be crowned, begins at 7:30 p.m. (CT). Both performances may be heard live on prorodeolive.com.

Contestants looking forward to San Antonio finals

The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, winner of the last six PRCA Indoor Rodeo Committee of the Year awards and the PRCA's only regular-season rodeo with more than $1 million in prize money, is underway in the AT&T Center. It is the second of nine Wrangler Million Dollar Tour Gold rodeos and will feature every reigning world champion in competition through Feb. 19. This year, for the first time, San Antonio is adding steer roping to its lineup with equal prize money. The event will be held Feb. 20 at the Exposition Center.
By Susan Kanode, For the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo

SAN ANTONIO – There were some very happy rodeo contestants in the AT&T Center Feb. 17 at the $1 million San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo.

Among the happiest was Shane Henderson, the steer wrestler from Winfield, Kan., who came here with his wife, Missy, on a sort of working vacation, and is making the very most of his time.

Henderson won $6,223 in the first of four preliminary brackets, and then he topped it off by winning the first semifinal round with a time of 3.8 seconds to add another $2,074 to his checking account. Henderson is now the highest money earner in any event here so far with $8,196.

“It’s unbelievable how great this has been,” Henderson said. “I was so excited to be here and it just keeps getting better. Hopefully, we can keep it going through the finals.”

The 2009 world champion team ropers, Nick Sartain and Kollin VonAhn, had to get a check in the semifinals to advance to the finals and they did better than that. With Sartain, from Yukon, Okla., heading and VonAhn, from Durant, Okla., roping the heels, they stopped the clock in 5.2 seconds and won the round. They moved to second in the money standings with $5,185 behind Jake Cooper from Monument, N.M., and Justin Wade Davis from Cottonwood, Calif., who have $5,963.

The second semifinal of the San Antonio Rodeo starts at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The top six money earners from that performance will join the top six from Thursday night’s rodeo in the finals on Saturday night. Not only are San Antonio championships at stake, first place in the finals pays $12,445, making it one of the most lucrative nights on the rodeo circuit.

Tuf Cooper Finds Groove at San Antonio

By Susan Kanode, for the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo

SAN ANTONIO – It took a couple of performances at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo for everything to go right for Tuf Cooper, and when it changed, it changed in a big way.

Cooper, from Decatur, Texas, tied for first in the tie-down roping on Tuesday night, came back and won the fourth round Wednesday and will now be part of the field in the semifinals Thursday night. Cooper and Timber Moore each had 7.4-second runs here in the third round and won $1,815. On Wednesday, his time was a little slower at 8.1 seconds, but with other cowboys taking chances that didn’t go their way, Cooper’s run held on for the go-round win.

Cooper, who just turned 21 last month, has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo three times and finished as the reserve world champion twice. He finished as the second-highest money winner in the fourth and final bracket of tie-down roping behind Adam Gray.

Brittany Pozzi won more money than any other contestant in the fourth bracket of competition at $6,482. Pozzi, from Victoria, Texas, rode her great horse, Duke, in the women’s barrel racing and placed in all four rounds, winning the first and third. She also has the fastest run of the rodeo so far at 13.75 seconds. She will have her semifinal run Friday night.

The top six money winners out of each semifinal will advance to Saturday night’s final round. Pozzi is likely to be among that group based on her earnings so far. However, since the champion is crowned based on their total earnings, she will be hoping to add to that and win her first San Antonio buckle.

Bull rider Cody Whitney from Asher, Okla., made his second victory lap around the AT&T Center Wednesday night. He scored 86 points on Andrews Rodeo’s Top Gear for first place. The two-time Wrangler NFR qualifier would have a jump on a third trip to Las Vegas to compete at rodeo’s championship event with a win in San Antonio.

SAN ANTONIO – With just one performance left before the semifinals begin at the $1 million San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, contestants are pulling out all the stops in an effort to advance.

That means taking extra chances, throwing all caution to the wind. It worked so well Feb. 15 that, in the first five of seven contests, brand new faces finished in the top spot during the third round of Bracket IV.

Australian Dave Worsfold won the bareback riding with an 88-point effort on Kesler Rodeo’s Street Dance. The $2,074 check is the first that Worsfold has earned in the AT&T Center. He will be hoping to add to it on Wednesday night to assure him a spot in the semifinals.

There was a tie in the steer wrestling involving two Mountain States Circuit cowboys. John Franzen from Riverton, Wyo., and Ken Lewis from La Junta, Colo., had times of 4.0 seconds to win $1,815 apiece. This was the first time for them to make a victory lap for a first place finish. It was the first check for Lewis, but the third for Franzen. He will be a favorite to advance through the semifinals to the finals on Saturday night.

In team roping there was another tie. Cody Odell from Como, Texas and Casey Chamberlain from Colorado City, Texas, tied with Jake Stanley from Hermiston, Ore., and Kinney Harrell from Marshall, Texas. Their 5.0-second runs earned them each $1,815.

Bradley Harter, who came close to winning his first world championship in 2010, was alone at the top of the leader board with an 83-point effort on Kesler Championship Rodeo’s Royal Visit. That netted him a check for $2,074 and put him in good position to advance. He picked up checks in the first and second round and will be hoping to make it a clean sweep on Wednesday.

In the tie-down roping, it was Texans Tuf Cooper and Timber Moore who had the fast times of the night. They each won $1,815 for their 7.4-second runs. This was the first check for both men.

The fastest time of the rodeo in the women’s barrel race happened on Tuesday night with no surprises. Brittany Pozzi, from Victoria, Texas, won the first round with a 13.98-second run. She bettered her time in the second round with a 13.89 to tie for second. She and her talented horse Duke have just been getting better in the AT&T Center arena.

On Tuesday, they had a time of 13.75 to win the round. If Pozzi continues this trend, she could easily break the arena record here. Tiffany Fox holds the record with a 13.69 second run she made in 2009.

Steve Woolsey, from Payson, Utah, won his second round in a row. Woolsey had a 78-point effort on Four L Rodeo’s Ox Bar and was the lone man to make it to the eight-second whistle.

The final round of competition for Bracket IV starts at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Bareback riders steal spotlight at San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo

By Susan Kanode, For the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo

SAN ANTONIO – With one bracket ending and the fourth – and final – one starting at the $1 million San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo on Feb. 13, it was a day full of action, and nowhere was that more evident than in the bareback riding competitions.

During the matinee performance, Texan Clint Cannon and Canadian Luke Creasy tied for the win for the second time in a row. They each earned $1,815 for their 86-point efforts on Sunday afternoon.

Cannon is the high money winner at the rodeo so far after having tied for first in three rounds and placing second in the other. He has a total of $6,482 here so far.

In the evening session, it was Cody DeMers’ time to shine.

DeMers is one of the happiest contestants at this year’s rodeo and most of it is because of what has happened outside the arena. On Jan. 30, his wife Nicole gave birth to the couple’s first child. While it was hard to leave his new daughter and come here to compete, DeMers is giving his family something to smile about. He had an 89-point effort Sunday night on Lancaster and Pickett Pro Rodeo’s Top Flight that paid $2,074.

“That horse was just outstanding,” DeMers said. “I love coming to San Antonio. It’s always one of my favorite rodeos, and I’d like nothing more than to win it. I’ve been focusing on things at home, so I wasn’t too sure how everything was going to go here. It was better than I ever could have expected.”

The Bracket IV bareback riding was extremely tough, taking an 84 to place and there were three of those. Among them was last year’s San Antonio champion Micky Downare, who is hoping for a repeat victory.

Team ropers Spencer Mitchell from Colusa, Calif., and Broc Cresta from Santa Rosa, Calif., also continued their hot streak with a 4.5 second run to win the matinee round. They finished atop the leader board in the money standings in Bracket III with $5,185, and will be competing in the first of two semifinals performances Feb. 17.

The fourth and final bracket will have its second-round competition here on Monday night at 7 p.m. At the conclusion of Wednesday night’s rodeo, the top five money winners will join the semifinals qualifiers.

The first performance of the semifinals is Thursday night. Friday night will also be a semifinals performance with the high money winners out of those two rodeos advancing to Saturday night’s finals.

Sheffield shows his skills in two events at San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Jesse Sheffield from Austin, Colo., demonstrated to large audiences at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Feb. 12 just why they ought to remember his name as one of the sport’s more skilled all-around hands.

In day-night sessions at the AT&T Center, Sheffield paired with Wes Miller of Big Piney, Wyo., to win the afternoon team roping competition in 5.0 seconds, and then came back to win the tie-down roping in the evening in a time of 8.5 seconds.

It was a parlay that put him in position to join Trevor Brazile as the only contestants able to qualify in two events in this $1 million rodeo and to challenge the 14-time world champion for the all-around title here.

Brazile is already through to the semifinals in both roping events with $5,704 in total money and Sheffield has $4,667 entering the final round of Bracket III on Feb. 13.

A regular on the ProRodeo trail for more than a decade, Sheffield broke through last year to finish 11th in the all-around world standings with $63,593 – nearly double his previous best earnings total.

Along the way, he captured 11 all-around titles in PRCA rodeos and 21 titles all together.

Bracket III will conclude Feb. 13 with a matinee performance at 1 p.m. (CT). The fourth and final bracket will debut in the AT&T Center at 7:30.

Team ropers keep momentum going at San Antonio Rodeo

By Susan Kanode, For the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo

SAN ANTONIO – Team ropers Spencer Mitchell and Broc Cresta are on a roll, and it’s one that they hope just keeps rolling all the way to the Las Vegas Strip.

With Mitchell from Colusa, Calif., doing the heading and Cresta, from Santa Rosa, Calif., roping the heels, the duo won the Fort Worth (Texas) Stock Show & Rodeo less than a week ago to bank $7,782. Then they went to the San Angelo (Texas) Rodeo where they finished second in the first round and earned another $2,196.

From San Angelo, they made the 220-mile trip to San Antonio to make their debut at this year’s rodeo in the AT&T Center Feb. 11 with a 5.2-second run that was good enough for first place in the first round of Bracket III. The win netted them $2,074 each, and puts them on pace to qualify for the semifinals here.

“It’s been good,” Cresta said. “Both of our horses have been outstanding and we couldn’t ask for anything more.”

There were only two bull riders who were successful at the ninth performance and both of them are former runners-up for the PRCA rookie of the year title. Taylor Cowan from Fort Pierre, S.D., nearly earned the title in 2009 and Jacob O’Mara came close in 2010. O’Mara, from Prairieville, La., won the bull riding on Friday night with an 88-point effort on D&H Cattle Company’s Velvet Slinger. That earned him $2,074. Cowan rodeo another bull from D& Hcalled Buckin’ Machine for 87 points. Cowan got a check for $1,556. Because they were the only two riders who were successful, they each earned an additional $778 in ground money.

Rusty Allen from Eagle Mountain, Utah, has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo five times, but hasn’t been there since 2008. He would like to change that, and very well could with a win here. Allen scored 88 points on Calgary Stampede’s Maiden Chick to win the first round and $2,074.

All of these contestants will have their second and third round competitions here on Saturday. Rodeo performances begin at 1 and 7:30 p.m.

Maier hoping for second San Antonio Rodeo championship

By Susan Kanode, For the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – One year ago, Ardie Maier was the high-money winner at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo when he earned the bull riding championship.

The $19,964 that he won here helped him qualify for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and there is nothing that the Timber Lake, S.D., cowboy would like more than to repeat on both fronts. Maier helped his quest significantly when he won the fourth round of his bracket in the AT&T Center on Feb. 10.

He did that with an 88-point effort on D & H Cattle Company’s Kool N Sexy. That was good for a first-place check, and combined with his previous earnings, he has won $3,630 here so far. Maier tied for first place in the Bracket II money standings with Trevor Kastner from Ardmore, Okla.

“It was do or die time tonight,” Maier said. “I knew I had to ride that bull if I was going to get to the semifinals. I’d seen that bull a couple of times before, but had never been on him. They changed deliveries on him and he was pretty bucky. I’m just glad it turned out the way it did.”

Maier was grinning from ear-to-ear when he made the victory lap after the win. He will be joined in the semifinals by his younger brother Corey who also lives in Timber Lake.

Curtis Garton, from Kaitaia, New Zealand, disrupted the winning streak of the Wright brothers in the saddle bronc riding when he topped the leader board on Feb. 10. Garton rode Burch Rodeo’s Vitalix for 85 points to finish first. He and reigning World Champion Cody Wright tied for first in the Bracket II money standings with $4,148 each. Cody’s younger brothers Jesse, Alex and Jake Wright will also represent their home state of Utah in the semifinals here.

Trevor Brazile, from Decatur, Texas, is on a mission to add to his 14 world titles. He and team roping partner Patrick Smith, from Midland, Texas, finished at the top of the money standings in Bracket II with $3,630 apiece. They are the reigning world champions in that event and will be joined by Nick Sartain, Yukon, Okla., and Kollin VonAhn, Durant, Okla., the 2009 world champions in the semifinals. Sliding into last place in team roping is the 2007 world champion header Chad Masters from Clarksville, Tenn., and his heeler, Jade Corkill, from Fallon, Nev.

Brazile also qualified for the semifinals in the tie-down roping. He is the defending champion in the AT&T Center having won $16,593 here last year.

Competition in the third of four brackets starts here on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Wright brothers’ domination continues at San Antonio

By Susan Kanode, For the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Jesse Wright had a rematch with Lunatic Fringe in the saddle bronc riding at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo on Wednesday night and it turned out crazy good.

The Hurricane, Utah, cowboy is coming off his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualification. It was there that he had his first meeting with the Burch Rodeo horse. He won Round 5 with an 89.5-point ride on Lunatic Fringe. When he found out that he had the horse again here he was pretty excited.

That excitement paid off with an 84-point ride in the AT&T Center and garnered him a first place finish. Prior to that ride, he had only won $259. The $2,074 he won at the seventh performance gives him a total of $2,333. He and twin brother Jake Wright from Hurricane, Utah, are tied for third place in the money standings.

Alex Wright, who lives in Virgin, Utah, is at the top of the money standings with $3,111. Cody Wright, of Milford, Utah, the two-time and reigning world champion, finished second Wednesday adding $1,556 to his earnings. He also had a rematch. He rode the Harry Vold horse, Elvis, for 81 points.

Cody earned the championship at Odessa, Texas, in January on this horse. He is second in the money standings with $2,593.

The top five money winners in each of the events advance to the semifinals here. With the Wright brothers holding down the top four positions, it is looking very favorable for them all to get to compete here again. Curtis Garton from Kaitaia, New Zealand is in the fifth place spot with $2,074.

The reigning San Antonio and World Champion Tie-Down Roper Trevor Brazile, from Decatur, Texas, was at the top of the leader board in that event Wednesday. He had a time of 8.1 seconds to win $2,074. Brazile and his team roping partner Patrick Smith, from Midland, Texas, also placed in team roping. Brazile is now in position to qualify for the semifinals in both events.

The eighth performance will be the final opportunity for the contestants in Bracket II to earn money and advance to the semifinals.

Brothers cash in at San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo

By Susan Kanode, For the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – It was definitely a night for brothers in the roughstock events at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo Feb. 8.

Four of the 11 contestants in the saddle bronc riding field carry the surname Wright, and they all earned money in the second round of Bracket II. Brothers Corey and Ardie Maier were the only bull riders to last the full eight seconds, so they both got checks and all the ground money.

In the saddle bronc riding, Alex Wright had the high-marked ride of the night with an 82-point effort on Burch Rodeo’s Broken Kettle. Reigning and two-time World Champion Cody Wright finished third and twins Jesse and Jake Wright tied for fourth place.

The Utah-based Wright brothers would have had a clean sweep were it not for Troy Crowser, the reigning rookie of the year in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Crowser, from Whitewood, S.D., had a 77-point ride for second place.

Jake and Alex Wright also earned money during the fifth performance Feb. 7, so they are both in strong position for a semifinals qualification here. Jesse and Cody will be hoping to add to their earnings and advance alongside their brothers. They all four travel together and feed off of each other’s energy.

“It seems like when one of us does well, we all step up to the plate,” Cody said. “I can’t imagine how exciting it would be for all of us to make itinto the finals.”

Ardie Maier, from Timber Lake S.D., is the reigning bull riding champion here and is hoping for back-to-back titles. Maier finished second on Tuesday night with his brother beating him by six points. Corey Maier, who also lives at Timber Lake, earned 83 points on Mo Betta Rodeo’s Homerun. Ardie Maier was 77 on Rafter H Rodeo’s Wicked Spot.

Contestants in Bracket II have two more opportunities to add enough to their earnings to advance to the semifinals, at 7 p.m. performances on Wednesday and Thursday.

Rookie bareback rider taking San Antonio Rodeo by storm

By Susan Kanode, For the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Last week, J.R. Vezain from Cowley, Wyo., finished third at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo in the bareback riding and made a big impression on fans, other bareback riders – and the judges.

This week the freshman at Vernon (Texas) College is showing San Antonio rodeo fans that he is definitely ready for the big time. The second bracket of competition started in the AT&T Center on Monday night with Vezain winning the first round.

The 18-year-old got on a horse that he’d only watched on television – Deuces Night of Carr Pro Rodeo – and rode him for 87 points and a $2,074 payday.

“I was pretty excited to get that horse,” Vezain said. “I’d watched him on TV at the Finals (Wrangler National Finals Rodeo) and knew it was definitely one that I wanted to get on.”

Vezain is coming off Dodge Montana Circuit Finals Rodeo wins in both the all-around and bareback riding. He also leads the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association standings in both those categories in the Southwest Region, and is in the top five in both bull riding and saddle bronc riding as well.

Reigning World Champion Team Ropers Trevor Brazile and Patrick Smith were the winners in that event Monday with a 4.9-second run. Brazile, from Decatur, Texas, and Smith from Midland, Texas, each collected $2,074.

Brazile earned his eighth world title in the all-around category last December and his third gold buckle in the tie-down roping. He is also the defending tie-down roping champion in the AT&T Center.

He had a time of 18.9 seconds in the tie-down roping here on Monday night that included a 10-second penalty. At most rodeos that would take him out of an opportunity to qualify for the finals, but here, qualifications are based on money won. Brazile will come back here with the intention of earning first place the next three nights.

Each of the brackets pays four places and the top five money winners advance to the semifinals. Brazile still has an opportunity to be in the semifinals here in team roping and tie-down roping.

The second round for bracket two starts in the AT&T Center at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Money winners advance at San Antonio
By Susan Kanode, For the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The first bracket of competition at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo is complete, with a steer wrestler and barrel racer coming through as high money winners.

Shane Henderson from Winfield, Kan., and Kelli Tolbert from Hooper, Utah, have earned $6,223 apiece so far, and have a chance to win much more. The five contestants in each event who win the most money in their bracket advance to the semifinals.

Henderson has been the most consistent contestant in the field so far, placing in all four rounds. He was third in the first round, tied for first in the second, won the third and tied for second during the Feb. 6 matinee.

Tolbert was two places out of the money in the first round with a 14.45-second run. She then figured out how to get the most out of her horse, and won the next three, going a little faster each time – 14.17, 14.14 and 14.00, respectively.

Tolbert’s hometown of Hooper, Utah, will have another representative in the San Antonio Rodeo semifinals. Colby Siddoway, a team roper from the small town, has also qualified. Siddoway won the championship here last year roping with Matt Zancanella. This year he’s paired with Ryan Motes, from Weatherford, Texas. “I’ll never forget that feeling of riding around the arena in the back of that truck after winning here last year,” Siddoway said. “I’d sure love to do it all over again.”

Wyoming’s Bobby Welsh is at the top of the standings in the bull riding. An 87-point ride on Frontier Rodeo’s Tigerlips Feb. 6 helped put him there. That first place finish was worth $2,074 and gave him total earnings of $5,704 here so far.

Consistency paying off for Kansas bulldogger at San AntonioBy Susan Kanode, For the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Shane Henderson is one happy cowboy. The Winfield, Kan., resident started his own tree trimming business last year and took a break from the rodeo trail.

He competed enough to qualify for the All American ProRodeo Finals in Waco, Texas, last October and earned enough there to qualify for the very prestigious San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo. Henderson has come close to qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo before, but never edged into the top 15. If he continues what he is doing in San Antonio, he may need to hire help to run his business and focus on bringing 600-pound steers to the dirt.

Henderson stopped the clock in 4.3 seconds to place third in the first round on Friday. He came back for his second and third round competitions and was again successful on Saturday. At the matinee, he tied for first place with Alex Robertson from Bend, Ore., with a time of 4.0. Then Saturday night, he was alone at the top of the leader board with a 3.8.

Henderson has won $4,926 here, and he still has another steer to compete on Sunday afternoon. Contestants advance to the semifinals with hopes of getting a shot at even more money based on their total earnings, and Henderson is already assured of a spot.

“I went to Waco just hoping I would win enough to get into San Antonio,” Henderson said. “Their competition format was similar and while I didn’t win the whole shooting match, I did pretty well. It got me really pumped up to come here and have some fun. This is unbelievable.”

Scott Kormos, from Teague, Texas, won the tie-down roping championship at the All American Pro Rodeo Finals, and like Henderson loves the format. Kormos won the first round and was second in the next two. He has earned $5,186 here.
