Ropin' and ridin' at Redding Rodeo; barbecue, dance on tap for tonight

Ropin' and ridin' at Redding Rodeo; barbecue, dance on tap for tonight

The 63rd annual Redding Rodeo Week kicks off today with a barbecue and dance at the Redding Rodeo Grounds and a week full of activities will follow.
The Redding Rodeo Association will serve a 14-ounce New York steak, bread, beans and a salad. The James Slick Band will provide music for the dance, which begins at 8 p.m.
Rodeo Week features a three-day rodeo, which starts Thursday, not to mention Saturday's always popular Redding Rodeo Parade.
The theme of this year's parade is "The Early Days of Western Ways."
Connie Moreland of Redding came up with the theme and won $100 and a spot in the parade for the effort.
The parade, as well as local businesses, will be decorated based upon the theme.
The Asphalt Cowboys, longtime rodeo promoters, will also honor retired state Sen. Maurice Johannessen and his wife, Marianne, with a Citizen of the Year award for their contributions to the north state, most recently seen in the newly constructed chapel at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery in Igo, said Tom Spade, spokesman for the Asphalt Cowboys.
It will be the first time the Asphalt Cowboys have presented the award, Spade said. The Cowboys may not give an award every year.
"If someone we feel has done an outstanding service for the community we'll give an award," he said.
The parade also will feature the Marine Corps Mounted Color Guard on palomino wild mustangs captured and adopted from the Bureau of Land Management, Spade said.
One of the most popular Rodeo Week events is the pancake breakfast, from 5 to 10 a.m. Friday at Roaring Gulch, otherwise known as Market Street between South and Placer streets.
Presale tickets are $3, while tickets purchased at the event are $4. Last year, more than 10,400 people showed up, Spade said.
"It is the world's largest outdoor, one-day breakfast," he said. "We've been trying to get together with Guinness to have that verified."
And, of course, Redding Rodeo Week would not be complete without the inept Lone Stranger and his sidekick staging a bank holdup in Redding and fleeing with the loot.
This year's holdup will again be Tuesday.
The Asphalt Cowboys offer a $500 reward for discovering identities of the two masked thieves who rob the bank and an initial $500 reward for finding the hidden cache. The reward money drops $100 each day the mysteries remain unsolved, Spade said.
"That always draws a big following," he said.
But Spade advises potential sleuths to keep their eyes on public property when searching for the stolen loot.
"The loot is never hidden on private property," he said.
